Reversing around a right-hand corner (L turn) in the Turkish driving test

What the rule says

Under Article 34 of the regulation, reversing around a right-hand (L) corner is done in one go, as shown in the Annex 19 diagram, without hitting or touching lines, the kerb or cones. When the turn is complete the candidate says “I have completed the turn” and the examiner then assesses it.

This manoeuvre is part of the Class B test; it does not apply to trailer classes (BE, D1E, DE, C1E, CE).

Step by step

1. Before starting, check traffic in your mirrors and signal in time and in the right direction.
2. Select reverse and back up slowly.
3. At the corner, start the turn by steering right. Remember that as the back of the car goes round the corner, the front swings out.
4. Keep checking both sides and behind during the turn, and keep the tyres off the lines.
5. When the car is parallel to the new road, straighten the wheel and stop. Say “I have completed the turn.”
6. Before pulling away again, check your mirrors, look over your shoulder into the blind spot and signal.

Red and yellow faults

On the “Reversing around a right-hand (L) corner” section of the form, these are red faults:

• Failing to complete the 90-degree turn in one go while reversing
• Tyres touching the lane line, or touching cones or the kerb, while reversing or pulling away
• Not signalling in time or in the right direction before the turn or when pulling away afterwards
• Not checking traffic in the mirrors before the turn or when pulling away

Yellow faults: failing to select reverse, stalling when pulling away, and no shoulder check before pulling away again.

Tips for doing it in one go

• “One go” means you cannot drive forward to correct during the turn. So keep your speed low and give the steering time; going slowly is not a fault.
• Start the turn too early and the inside rear wheel closes in on the kerb; start too late and the car swings out towards the outer line. Watch the corner in the mirror.
• Remember to straighten: if the wheels are still turned when the car is parallel to the road, it ends up crooked.
