What the rule says

Turning in a narrow space is only part of the Class B test. Under Article 34 of the regulation it is done without leaving the area marked in the Annex 20 diagram, in at most three moves, without hitting or touching lines, the kerb or cones.

The regulation also describes the order: the first move is made towards the direction of the turn; the car is put in reverse and completes the second move backwards; the car is put in a forward gear and makes the third move, ending in a position to continue its journey.

The three moves

Before starting, check traffic in your mirrors and signal in time towards the turn. Then:

  1. First move (forward): steer towards the turn and move forward slowly. Stop as you approach the edge of the area.
  2. Second move (reverse): select reverse, steer the other way and reverse slowly. Stop as the back approaches the edge of the area.
  3. Third move (forward): select a forward gear, steer the way you are going and straighten up as the car lines up with the road.

Make sure the car has stopped completely before every gear change.

Red and yellow faults

On the “Turning in a narrow space” section of the form, these are red faults:

  • Not signalling in time and in the right direction before starting the turn
  • Leaving the marked area, or touching or hitting the cones
  • Failing to complete the turn within the marked area in at most three moves

Yellow faults: weak manoeuvring technique (such as stopping the car repeatedly and moving off again without changing gear), stalling, and failing to recognise hazards.

Tips for fitting it into three moves

  • Turn the wheel quickly while the car moves slowly; getting the wheels turned early is how you make the most of the space in the first and second moves.
  • At the end of each move, be ready to turn the wheel the other way for the next one.
  • Watch the edges of the area in the mirrors and through the windows. Judging where your front and rear bumpers are is the heart of this manoeuvre.

How to practise in Parking Trainer

The game has no narrow-space turning course. But this manoeuvre’s rhythm, “stop, change gear, turn the wheel the other way, move slowly”, is the same as in parallel parking. You switch between D, R and D again, and in the game a gear change that reverses direction waits until the car has stopped.
